Gakpo now has three goals in his last five Premier League games and this was a very impressive one. Finding the back of the net even more regularly has to be the next step for the Dutch winger under Slot but he is showing promising signs. He might have had a second here had not been offside in the build-up.
Instrumental in breaking down the Leicester low block a few times with his dribbling ability and knack of dropping the shoulder to beat his marker, it was Gakpo's shot from range that pulled Liverpool level. From there, you always thought the Reds would find a way to win the game.
Mohamed Salah, though he was stifled for a while, was also on the scoresheet once again too. Already with incredible numbers, he continues to get better and better. With at least two of the Reds' forward options on fire, they will have a great chance whoever they are playing. Right now, Gakpo and Salah are showing themselves to be quite the deadly duo.
Rotation over rhythm?Despite the stunning performance that Dominik Szoboszlai produced against Spurs last time out — his best in the Reds shirt to date — was selected for this one. Szoboszlai, in all likelihood, would have been preferred on the big pitch at West Ham on Sunday, where his running power could be a substantial asset, had he not been booked here and therefore suspended.
Instead, Jones will get another go. It will help the Liverpool number 17 to get another significant portion of a game under his belt, but it is damaging for Szoboszlai who will now be unable to kick on. Slot might now wish that he had started the Hungarian tonight, but that is only in hindsight. Generally, his rotation paid off because it turned into a fairly routine win.
Nunez did well enough and those being integrated back into the team are being carefully managed too. and Harvey Elliott must be champing at the bit, but Slot is making them wait. They simply can't argue given it is working; every week at the moment, Slot is being proven right.
Liverpool now seven points clearWith Harry Wilson and Rodrigo Muniz firing Fulham to a surprise 2-1 win away at Chelsea earlier in the day, this was a chance for Liverpool to move seven points clear at the top of the table. And still, the Reds have a game in hand — the Merseyside derby against Everton, for which the date is still to be confirmed.
By beating Leicester, Liverpool took advantage of the slip from a potential rival, making no mistake against the Foxes in the end. It was looking slightly touch and go for a while as the chances went begging first half. By the time Liverpool led for the first time, though, it was only going to end one way.
The Leicester threat was limited. For Liverpool, the march towards a potential league title continues. With such a lead, and such a strong roster of players to pick from, its already position has only been further strengthened.
