Manmohan Singh - two-time Prime Minister and the architect of India's economic reforms, died of age-related medical conditions today at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. He was 92.A scholar and a statesman who served as the 13th Prime Minister of India, Dr Singh is credited for helping the Indian economy enter the era of liberalisation and then becoming the Finance Minister who finished the task at hand. He was a renowned name in the global financial and economic sectors. His government introduced pathbreaking initiatives like Right to Information (RTI), Right to Education (RTE) and MNREGA.Nevertheless, like any other public figure he was subject of criticism or sometime even ridicule. As a Prime Minister, he was termed weak, with Sonia Gandhi acknowledged as the power behind the throne during the two terms of his premiership. However, there have been times when the Congress leader showed rare and sustained aggression against BJP, which was the prinicpal Opposition party at the time. His sudden mood swing were seen as his determination to counter repeated attacks by BJP leaders Narendra Modi (then Gujarat chief minister) who called him a night watchman awaiting the advent of Rahul Gandhi."If the leader of opposition (and) colleagues reflects calmly, they will conclude that the path we have chosen is the right path," De Singh said. In a sharp observation, Singh said "men of envy" disparage everything whether good or bad. "I appeal to his better sense to make a judgment… considering wider national interest and not merely in pursuit of a mere political point," he added.Manmohan Singh's Repeated Potshots On Narendra Modi governmentIn the initial years of Narendra Modi government, Manmohan Singh on multiple occasions took potshots against the Prime Minister - a rarity from a leader not known for his public speaking skills or for delivering a political punch to his opponents in public in his long years as a politician. At times, Singh was seen making fun of Modi's oratory skills."Hamare Pradhan Mantri vikas ki baat karte hain. Jahan Jaate hain vikas ke naam par apni dukandaari chamkaane ki baat karte hain (Our Prime Minister talks of development. Wherever he goes, he tries to promote himself in the name of development)," Dr Singh said while speaking at the concluding ceremony of the 125th birth anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. On June 9, 2015, while addressing the Congress chief ministers' meeting in New Delhi, Dr Singh called Modi a "adept salesman, event manager and communicator".The following month, the Congress leader responded to BJP's description of the UPA regime as corrupt. "I want to assure you that we have been fighting corruption, we will continue to fight corruption and there will be no compromise with corruption. As far as I am concerned, I can say in all humility that I have not used my public office to enrich myself, to enrich my family or to enrich my friends," Dr Singh had said while speaking at a function organised by the Congress’s student wing, NSUI.At the same event, he termed the Modi’s Make in India, a "carbon copy" of the UPA’s new manufacturing policy.
