With Ravindra Jadeja (4) at the crease and Rishabh Pant (6) at the wicket, India lost three fast wickets before ending the second day on 164/5 in their first innings.

In the second over of their first innings, the visitors lost captain Rohit Sharma for only three runs. Pat Cummins dismissed Rohit with a short delivery, continuing his terrible run with the bat.

KL Rahul, who was moved to number three, seemed to be in excellent form once again, but Cummins delivered a peach of a delivery to get him. When Virat Kohli joined Yashasvi Jaiswal in the middle, India was at 51/2 and struggling, with Rahul out for 24 runs in the 15th over.

The Indian squad was saved by Kohli and Jaiswal, who put together a 102-run partnership for the third wicket. Jaiswal seemed to be headed for a huge one after smashing an incredible half-century.

Australia unexpectedly found an opportunity when India’s mini-collapse was brought on by Jaiswal’s regrettable run-out. The youthful starter hit 82 runs, including 11 fours and a six, before being removed.

Kohli likewise seemed to be in excellent rhythm during his 36 runs, but after Jaiswal’s departure, he lost focus.

Kohli fell into the same trap despite being aware of Australia’s outside off-stump strategy against him. After bowling the same line, Scott Boland finally overcame Kohli’s patience and removed him in the 43rd over.

In his very next over, Boland removed Akash Deep for zero, doubling his total. Three overs altered the outcome of the match, bringing India down to 159/5 from a commanding 153/2 position.

India must make a great effort to escape the follow-on, since they are still 310 runs behind Australia’s incredible first-inning total of 474.

Australia put pressure on Indian bowlers earlier in the day by extending their batting dominance and scoring some early runs. At the legendary MCG, Steve Smith spearheaded the assault with the bat and hammered a spectacular century.

Smith scored his eleventh century against India and his 34th overall.

The five-match series is now tied at one, and India has to win in Melbourne to qualify for the World Test Championship as well as to at least keep the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
