This curiosity drove me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru University. My passion for understanding and solving complex systems deepened further during my Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering at Wright State University Ohio where I graduated with a 3.9/4.0 GPA.
The field of network engineering with its complexity and intricacies truly fascinated me. Every challenge felt like solving a puzzle—identifying issues engineering solutions and ultimately witnessing a system function seamlessly. The satisfaction derived from creating efficient reliable networks continues to drive my passion for this ever-evolving field.
Q2: If you could tell us about one specific moment in your career that really made a difference?
Raja Kolli: One of the most defining moments in my career was leading the High-Split project at Charter Communications. This initiative involved reallocating DOCSIS upload frequencies to higher RF bands enabling a 200% increase in upload speeds. By optimizing spectrum allocation this project supported bandwidth-intensive applications like video conferencing cloud gaming and remote work.
The challenges of coordinating the transition across millions of subscribers and ensuring seamless service delivery pushed me to leverage both my technical expertise and leadership skills. The success of this project had a profound impact on customer experiences and cemented my role as a leader in innovative network transformations.
Q3: Youve led many high-visibility projects. What project are you most proud of and why?
Raja Kolli: Among the projects I’ve led the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF) initiative stands out. This project aimed to deliver gigabit broadband to over 1 million unserved customer locations across 24 states bridging the digital divide in rural communities. My role involved network planning and overseeing the deployment of 28 miles of newly constructed Spectrum gigabit broadband infrastructure directly enhancing access to education healthcare and business opportunities. The project’s scale and societal impact make it a highlight of my career. The technical difficulties presented in this were huge and so was the stake in this. However this was also a route that provided me with an opportunity to implement all those skills learned over the years to make a difference in service quality for subscribers. Its successful execution has brought in lots of satisfaction and added to my reputation as a reliable leader in network engineering.
Q4: What are some of the challenges you have faced in your career and how have you overcome them?
Raja Kolli: I have faced my fair share of difficult circumstances whether it was a large-scale network transformation or timelines that were very tight. One such situation was when as a lead Engineer at AIG Technologies I was leading the redesign of more than 50 global sites. Every site presented its own set of requirements and complexities and managing all that with multiple teams across different time zones was a task. However I overcame these challenges by being methodical in my approach: breaking the project into manageable segments setting clear milestones and maintaining constant communication. Patience persistence and effective stakeholder management played an important role in dealing with these challenges.
Q5: Please describe a project that you believe transformed the organization.
Raja Kolli: The design and deployment of network architectures for branch and campus offices globally were led by me at AIG Technologies. I implemented architectural guidelines which were realized in more than 50 sites and involved over 35000 users. This wasnt just an effort at smoothing network management but a way of guaranteeing coherence and consistency across regions enhancing operational efficiency at a much higher rate within the organization. This allowed teams to quickly troubleshoot issues and reduce the risk of network outages that would translate into increased productivity and reduced costs for the organization.
Q6: What drives you and what motivates you as a network engineer?
Raja Kolli: It is actually the urge to solve a complex problem and the satisfaction of providing a robust and reliable solution. The technology will keep on changing; it needs to learn day by day in order to move with the leading edge. This curiosity about continuous improvement and innovation moves me. Whether this is team leadership or troubleshooting any difficult network issue every challenge means an avenue to growth and making tangible impact.
Q7: How did your academic background prepare you for network engineering?
Raja Kolli:My academic journey laid the foundation for my technical expertise in network engineering. I earned my Master’s degree in Electronics and Computers Engineering from Wright State University graduating with a 3.9/4.0 GPA. During this time I focused on advanced topics like complex network systems hardware design and real-time communications. The rigorous curriculum and hands-on research projects equipped me with a deep understanding of both the hardware and software aspects of networking.
