She was just 24 years old... and she had dreams of becoming a bank officer and getting a government job. Her family was middle class, so she had a private job and also prepared for banking exams. She used to go to office every morning and return in the evening and start preparing. Meanwhile, good news came in the family and her sister's marriage was fixed. Everything was going well when suddenly a storm came and her life completely changed into an unforgettable pain.
It was the ill-fated day of 28 April 2022. It must have been around 8:30 in the morning when Sakshi (a fictitious name) was getting ready like every day and going to her office. She had just reached the first floor of her office building when a man came from behind and threw acid on her and ran away. The acid splashes badly burnt her hands, chest, head, back and legs.
There was a commotion in the building and Sakshi was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. After getting the news of the incident, the police team also reached the hospital. Sakshi was in severe pain, but despite this, when she was asked who did all this, one name came out of her mouth - Nagesh Babu. When the family members were questioned, it was found out that this man named Nagesh lived on rent in Sakshi's uncle's house.
Actually, Sakshi was preparing for the exam by staying at her uncle's house in Bengaluru. 27-year-old Nagesh Babu, who lived on rent in the same house, ran a clothing factory and was in one-sided love with Sakshi. According to the Indian Express report, Nagesh proposed to Sakshi several times, but she refused every time. However, Sakshi never told anything about this to her family.
On April 27, Nagesh followed Sakshi and tried to marry her forcibly. This time she got angry and told everything to her uncle and aunt. Sakshi's uncle scolded Nagesh, asked him to vacate the house immediately and also informed her elder brother about his act.
The next day, Nagesh attacked Sakshi with acid while she was going to the office in the morning and fled. After recording Sakshi's statement, the police obtained the CCTV footage of the building and started looking for Nagesh. This was the first case before the police in which the name of the accused and the motive behind the attack were known, but the accused was absconding.
Police teams searched the entire city to find Nagesh, but could not find any trace of him. His sister and elder brother were also detained and questioned, but they too did not know where Nagesh was hiding. The last location of Nagesh's mobile was found in the Hoskote area of Bengaluru Rural, which is near the Tamil Nadu border. He had called his brother for the last time and after that, he threw away his mobile.
Before fleeing, he had also sold all the machines in his factory. Time was passing and there was no information about Nagesh. He was searched in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, but the police came up empty-handed. In such a situation, the police asked for help from the people and on May 4, released four different pictures of Nagesh and appealed for clues about him. And finally, after two weeks, the efforts of the police bore fruit.
On May 13, 2022, Bengaluru police got a lead from the Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu. There, a man reached the local police station and said that he had seen a sadhu who looked like Nagesh in an ashram. He said that the sadhu's face resembles the one in the posters released by the police. On receiving the news, two personnel of Bengaluru police reached that ashram in Tiruvannamalai district in plain clothes and started searching for Nagesh.
After about an hour of hard work, these two policemen found the sadhu about whom they were informed. After looking closely, the policemen were convinced that this was Nagesh. He was in the guise of a sadhu and was getting work done with the officials of the ashram. The police caught him as soon as they got the chance and left for Bangalore.
On the way, Nagesh tried to escape once again near Kengeri area, but this time the police shot him in the leg and caught him. On May 14, 2022, Bengaluru Police held a press conference and announced that Nagesh Babu, the acid attacker, had been arrested. Police said that after the attack, he had fled to Tamil Nadu and was hiding in an ashram. In August 2022, the police filed a 770-page charge sheet against Nagesh.
