The bacteria Propionibacterium acnes (now called Cutibacterium acnes) naturally live on the skin. “When the skin pores get clogged, these bacteria multiply, causing inflammation in the skin and leading to redness, swelling and cysts on various parts of the body,” says the expert.

Some medications, such as corticosteroids, or contraceptive pills with a specific hormonal composition, can help reduce inflammation in the body and prevent pregnancy. “But these medications can trigger acne, or make it worse.”

Now know how to treat acne

1. Topical Treatment

  • Retinoids: Retinoids are derived from vitamin A, they help prevent clogged pores and promote cell turnover.
  • Benzoyl peroxide: These fight acne-causing bacteria and reduce inflammation. They are especially effective for people with mild acne.
  • Salicylic acid: A beta-hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin and unclogs pores. Salicylic acid is a common ingredient in many over-the-counter products designed to fight acne.
  • Antibiotic creams : These reduce bacteria and inflammation and prevent acne from growing.

2. Oral medication

  • Antibiotics: “Oral antibiotics such as doxycycline and minocycline are used to treat moderate to severe acne and reduce bacterial growth and inflammation,” says the expert.
  • Hormonal therapy: Contraceptive pills or anti-androgens such as spironolactone can control hormonal imbalances in women, as well as reduce sebum production.
