The reality is, though, Alexander-Arnold has done little to stem the tide of reports linking him with a move to Madrid, and the general consensus seems to be that he is more likely to leave Liverpool next summer than either Mohamed Salah or Virgil van Dijk, who are both in the same situation as the right-back.

The 26-year-old said in September that he had no intention of letting his talks with Liverpool play out in public, but his silence has been amplified by both Salah and Van Dijk, who have effectively said that they want to stay with the Reds.

A number of former Liverpool players — including Jamie Carragher — have warned Alexander-Arnold in recent times that he risks losing his legendary status at Anfield if he leaves for free at the end of the season, but earlier this season David Beckham offered a first-hand view from the other side of the fence, as he discussed the appeal of playing for Real Madrid.

Beckham, who left Manchester United to join Madrid in 2003, said on CBS: "As big as United was — that was my team — and I thought it was the biggest and best club in the world... but then you arrive at somewhere like Real Madrid, and all of a sudden there's a different feeling.

"I must admit, when we (United) played Real Madrid in the Champions League at Old Trafford, I waited in the tunnel to watch the Real Madrid players walk off the bus. Because there's something about that club that is special. I was used to playing at United, I go to Madrid and I'm playing with Zizou, Roberto Carlos, Raul, Ronaldo, all of these great players, and I feel like I really have to get my game together."
