Income Tax-Digi Yatra Update: Recently a news created a stir on social media and various platforms, in which it was claimed that the Income Tax Department will use Digi Yatra App to track tax evaders. Reports also said that the tax department may use Digi Yatra data to detect people who do not file income tax returns (ITR) despite having high income.

After this news, many people got confused and started fearing that the tax department will issue a notice. However, the Income Tax Department has issued a clarification on this and dismissed all the rumours.

After these news spread, PIB Fact Check also investigated the matter. After investigation, PIB claimed that this news is completely fake.

What is Digi Yatra app and its purpose?

Digi Yatra app aims to make the travel of air passengers seamless and paperless. The app helps passengers easily access their identity, biometrics and air ticket information at the airport through face recognition technology.

  • Main characteristics:
    • To make identification of passengers easier.
    • Paperless experience at the airport.
    • Capturing ID, biometrics and ticket information.

However, it is not mandatory to use the Digi Yatra app. Passengers can use this app as per their wish.

What is the truth of the news?

Reports had claimed that the Income Tax Department would access the data of Digi Yatra app to detect discrepancies in income. Additionally, it was also said that notices will be sent to tax evaders based on Digi Yatra data from 2025.

However, the Income Tax Department and PIB Fact Check rejected these claims outright and termed them as rumours.
