Kolkata: A day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday had held a public meeting in Sandeshkhali and said that if Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power in West Bengal, it will set up a commission to probe the atrocities done against women there.
“Mamata Banerjee had asked to stay away from naughty people, the biggest naughty person of the state is herself. Mamata Banerjee will also be punished if she is found guilty in the probe against the atrocities against the women in Sandeshkhali,” said Adhikari.
Taking further potshots, the Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Legislative Assembly said that there were lapses in the nomination papers filed by Trinamool Congress (TMC) sitting MP Haji Nurul Islam.
Notably, before the state Assembly election in 2026, a bypoll in Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency is necessary due to the death of the sitting TMC MP.
“Our Lok Sabha candidate Rekha Patra has moved Calcutta High Court over this issue and the hearing is due on January 15. In this year's Lok Sabha elections, we have a lead of 7000 votes from just Sandeshkhali, in 2026 we will win this Assembly constituency by over 27000 votes,” further mentioned Adhikari
Countering Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s claims of development in Sandeshkhali, Adhikari added, “It seems she is more of the opposition leader than CM. She was speaking as if became the CM just six months back. If BJP is voted to power, then everything will be upgraded with the help of a double-engine government. Proper medical assistance is also not available in Sandeshkhali.”
Incidentally, on Monday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Sandeshkhali, her first trip to the region since the massive and violent protests, erupted over allegations of sexual harassment against local TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates.
Addressing the gathering apart from promising more development of the region, Mamata stated that the false propaganda ahead of the Lok Sabha elections were done by the saffron camp and also asked everyone to stay ‘peacefully’. Adhikari also reminded people that saffron camp's membership drive is extended till January 5.
