Almost 140 areas are on high alert for flooding as heavy rain sparks chaos.
The Environment Agency has issued dozens of flood warnings to hit across the UK today (January 1). There are 136 flood warnings in place and 115 flood alerts.
People in warning areas should move their family and pets somewhere else if possible and move vehicles to higher ground if it is safe to do so.
Important or expensive items in the home should be moved to the upper floors to minimise risk of damage. Any protections in place at the property such as flood barriers or air brick covers should be employed.
Alerts are less severe, but warn people that they should prepare a bag with essential insurance documents and medications in case they need to leave their home.
They should also ensure they know how to turn off their gas, electricity and water in case of any building damage and plan somewhere else to go if their home is impacted.
The Met Office has also issued weather warnings, with an amber alert for rain in place across northwest England with rain expected to affect parts of Cheshire, Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.
It states that heavy rainfall is "likely to lead to disruption including flooding in some locations" with a chance some places could see more than 10cm of rain.
It said: "40-50 mm rain is expected fairly widely, with 50-100 mm across west-facing hills.
"There is a chance a few locations could see in excess of 100mm."
