On Wednesday, a Delhi court prolonged the police custody of a Gogi gang member who was detained after attempting to extract Rs 5 crore from a businessman. The accused is suspected of being a part of a global extortion ring.
According to the allegations, the accused called the businessman and threatened to kill his kid if he didn’t pay the extortion. An unidentified phone called the businessman on WhatsApp. He answered the phone. He didn’t answer the phone after that. The accused then sent him an audio tape.
After reviewing the Delhi Police’s motion, Judicial Magistrate of First Class (JMFC) Himanshu Sehloth prolonged Naveen, also known as Sonu,’s police detention for an additional three days. On January 4, he is scheduled to appear in court.
According to reports, the accused is the brother of criminal Dinesh Mathur, also known as Karala, who is now leading the Gogi Gang after his passing.
After three days in police detention, accused Naveen was brought before the duty magistrate on January 1. On December 29, he was placed on remand for three days.
The Investigation Officer (IO) said that two laptops, three additional mobile phones, and one iPhone were confiscated during detention while requesting an extension of remand.
It came to light during questioning that the accused had used a fake passport to fly to Dubai with someone named Harish, also known as Chintu. According to investigators, he is a part of a global extortion scheme.
Additionally, IO claimed that a card had been found on the accused. International and jail-based phone numbers on this card are thought to be connected to the global extortion scheme.
In order to retrieve the falsified passport and investigate the accused’s involvement in the global extortion scheme, he must be placed under additional jail confinement. The relevant court is also considering an application for authorization to gather voice samples.
Advocates Manish Godara, Akshay, and Virender Mual represented the accused. By arguing that the accused is not included in the FIR and that the alleged criminal conduct relate to a separate topic, they contested the extension of detention. Custodial questioning is not necessary since recovery has already occurred.
On the complaint submitted by Tagore Garden resident and businessman Pavan Kumar, a formal complaint was lodged. He said that on December 24, 2024, he got a threatening call on WhatsApp from an unidentified number. Naveen, also known as Sonu, was taken into custody by Delhi Police after the filing of the FIR.
