Usually when a movie is made with a huge star cast fans producers directors and others expect it to perform well on the big screen. However sometimes the outcome is completely opposite. When makers cast multiple stars in a film it can become cluttered and the storyline may get lost. Something similar happened with this film. In 1980 BR Chopra produced the movie which was directed by Ravi Chopra. The film featured a massive cast of 10 actors including Dharmendra Jeetendra Vinod Khanna Vinod Mehra Hema Malini Parveen Babi and more. Despite such a star-studded lineup the movie turned out to be a huge flop at the box office.
If the star cast hasnt already given you a hint let us tell you that the film in discussion is The Burning Train. Apart from the aforementioned actors the movie also starred Neetu Singh Danny Denzongpa Navin Nischol and Simi Garewal. Despite featuring such big superstars the film failed miserably at the box office. The makers invested a significant amount of money in the project even going to the extent of setting an actual train on fire for one of the scenes.
Did you know that some action sequences of the film were shot on an actual Rajdhani Express? The shooting used to take place at stations such as Panvel and Baroda during night shifts between 7 pm and 4 am.
On the other hand a major portion of the movie was shot in Mumbais Film City where a special set was constructed. The film was also shot in Delhi to capture a scene featuring the Rajdhani Express departing from the Delhi station. Shooting this scene proved to be challenging as thousands of people gathered to watch. Additionally 400 junior artists were hired for the film which further inflated its budget. The movie was based on Hollywoods The Towering Inferno.
According to a report by DNA it took five years for the film to finally be released. Moreover the movie featured special effects for which specialized technicians were hired from Hollywood.
The film was shot over 130 days using five cameras. Furthermore silver foil suits were specially imported for the main cast. As a result the movies runtime extended to four hours. To shorten it several songs and scenes had to be edited out.
Coming to the films budget reports suggest that The Burning Train was made on a budget of Rs 25–30 crores. However the film managed to collect only Rs 6 crores making it a massive disaster and one of the biggest flops in India. The failure of the movie also pushed its makers into massive debt.
