Assam Police seizes 11,100 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup worth Rs 2 crore in Cachar district

Cachar: On Friday, Assam Police confiscated 11,100 bottles of cough syrup containing codeine, valued at Rs two crore, from a car in the Cachar district of the state, close to Damcherra. In a post on X, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Cachar Police carried out the anti-drug operation using reliable information.

“A car carrying illicit drugs was stopped during an anti-narcotics operation by @CacharPolice in Damcherra, which was based on reliable intelligence. 11,100 bottles of cough syrup containing codeine, valued at Rs2cr, were found after a comprehensive search. Excellent work, @assampolice,” Sarma said on X.

In an interview with the media on Wednesday at the State Guest House in Koinadhara, Guwahati, Sarma said that 183 kg of heroin and other narcotics valued at Rs 682.44 crore were confiscated by police in 2024.

“In 2021, police seized drugs worth Rs 420.17 crore, drugs worth Rs 784.55 crore in 2022, drugs worth Rs 742.09 crore in 2023, and drugs worth Rs 682.44 crore seized last year,” added Chief Minister Sarma.

22,776 kg of ganja, 114 kg of opium, 33.07 lakh pills of psychoactive substances, 14 kg of morphine, and 2.30 lakh bottles of cough syrup were confiscated by police last year.

In 2024, Assam police made 5,059 arrests and filed 3,287 charges around the state.

But, in keeping with its campaign against child marriage in the state, police made 5,978 arrests and filed 6,361 charges across the state between 2021 and 2024.

Police submitted charge papers in 5,577 instances during that time, according to the chief minister of Assam.

“In 2023, police arrested 4,927 persons and 641 persons in 2024 during its drive against child marriage in the state,” stated Chief Minister Sarma.

According to the chief minister of Assam, the state has seen a decrease in crime in 2024.

“A total of 133,239 criminal cases were reported in 2021; by 2024, that number had dropped to 49,966. The state’s crime rate (per lakh people) has decreased from 379 in 2021 to 139.2. Likewise, there has been a decrease in crime against women and SC/ST, according to the chief minister of Assam.
