Police and social workers have revealed that this illegal racket, which was earlier run in a secret and limited area, is now spreading rapidly through the Internet.

Most of the grooms are rich, wealthy businessmen from Oman, Qatar and Bahrain who pay money to marry underage girls. After Nikaah, the brides are sent to their husbands on tourist visas, where they are sexually exploited. In the Hyderabad bride market, girls and women from poor and vulnerable sections are targeted. They are lured with false promises and dreams of a better lifestyle and money. These girls are then sold to rich people in the name of marriage in different parts of the country and in some cases even internationally.

Marriages are happening with men three times older than their age.

According to a report in Times of India, 22-year-old Fatima (name changed) married a man three times her age to get her grandmother treated and educate her sister. The girl said that her Nikah was fixed through video conferencing. She was promised Rs 2 lakh and taken to Oman. Fatima was called to Mysore in Karnataka along with agents for Nikah. Both agents had fixed Fatima's video conferencing Nikah in an SUV in exchange for Rs 1 lakh. But after this, the deal was cancelled and now she will have to wait till the next proposal comes.

A broker told the Times of India that photographs of girls aged 18 to 25 years are shared with businessmen from Oman, Bahrain and Qatar. After the match is fixed, the Nikah ceremony is completed on a video call with the Qazi. According to the report, at least 20 to 30 such marriages are taking place every month.
