Australia defeated India 2-1 to win the Border Gavaskar Trophy in a historic triumph at SCG. The Australians comfortably reached the 162 win objective that the visitors had set. Steve Smith (four), Sam Konstas (22), and Marnus Labuschagne (six) were all taken out by an Indian onslaught that did not include the injured Jasprit Bumrah.
Smith, who is now on 9,999, painfully missed out on being the fourth Australian and just the fifteenth player to surpass 10,000 Test runs.
Forty-five minutes into the morning session, India was dismissed for 157, adding just 16 to their overnight total of 141-6. Pat Cummins grabbed 3-44, while Scott Boland finished with 10-45 and 10 wickets for the game. The victory guaranteed the Australians a place in the World Test Championship final against South Africa in June at Lord’s.
