Making movies in India can be a costly affair. High-budget films often require hefty payments for actors and special effects. The bigger the star the higher the expenses. However even starring big name doesnt always ensure success and sometimes it can result in significant losses. One film stands as a perfect example of this. Released in 2023 the film we are talking about is The Lady Killer. Directed by Ajay Bahl the film starred Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar in lead roles. Made in a budget of Rs 45 crore the suspense drama earned only Rs 60000 resulting in a staggering 99.99% loss. This makes it one of the biggest flops in Indian cinema history. When it was released the film sold only 293 tickets on its opening day and earned less than a lakh in total. Director Ajay Bahl revealed that approximately 30 pages of the 117-page screenplay were never shot leading to missing scenes that could have enhanced character development and narrative depth. Due to rushed production Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar couldnt promote the film. The lack of promotional activities led to minimal audience awareness contributing to its poor reception. Moreover the film was released without a complete ending which left audiences dissatisfied and contributed to negative reviews. The movie was screened in only a limited number of theatres in November 2023. The makers had a streaming deal with Netflix for its release in December and to follow this agreement they had to release the film in theatres first. After the film tanked at the box office and received negative review from masses and critics the Netflix deal fell through. It was then released for free on Youtube in September 2024 where it garnered 2.4 million views but mostly met with unfavourable comments. The Lady Killer is a thriller suspense drama featuring a small-town playboy who becomes entangled with a mysterious woman hence leading to unforeseen complications. Apart from Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar the film also stars Priyanka Bose Sanjay Mishra Saurabh Shukla S.M. Zaheer in supporting roles.
