Australia beat India by 6 wickets in the fifth and final Test in Sydney on Sunday, January 5, to secure a 3-1 victory in the five-match series.
Australia put up a remarkable display during the Test match at the crowded Sydney Cricket Ground, finishing strong in three days to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in ten years. Australia’s lengthy wait for a Test series victory over India was ended with an outstanding bowling performance followed by a strong run chase.
Australia reached their second consecutive World Test Championship final after chasing down the 162-run goal in 27 overs, led by debutant all-rounder Beu Webster, who struck the game-winning runs. At Lord’s in June, they will play South Africa in the WTC final.
Travis Head played an undefeated knock of 34 runs with four boundaries, while Webster stayed undefeated with 39 runs off 34 balls and six fours.
With an important 41 runs in only 45 balls, Usman Khawaja was the highest scorer for the home team.
Prasidh Krishna took three early wickets in the opening session, removing Steve Smith (4), Marnus Labuschagne (6), and Sam Konstas (22), keeping India in the match for a time.
After that, Khawaja faced Indian bowlers and, with a 46-run partnership with Travis Head, moved his team closer to the goal. Mohammed Siraj removed Khawaja for 41 runs, but given the modest goal they set on Day 3, it seemed to be too late for the Indian squad.
Head and Webster stitched a match-winning 58-run partnership for the fifth wicket, ending India’s chances of further triumph.
