Sydney [Australia], January 5: Sam Konstas, an Australian rookie, was criticized by India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir for engaging in an improper and heated verbal altercation with Jasprit Bumrah on the first day of the Sydney Test.
When the 19-year-old Konstas got into a verbal altercation with the Indian pace spearhead in the closing seconds of the first day, Bumrah grew noticeably upset. Usman Khawaja felt the effects of Bumrah’s ferocity as he offered KL Rahul a significant outside edge at second slip on the subsequent ball.
“rough folks play rough sports. When Usman Khawaja was taking his time, he had no business conversing with Jasprit Bumrah. He has no business or right to be associated with Jasprit Bumrah. During the press conference after the game, Gambhir said, “That was the responsibility of the umpire and the person batting at the other end.”
Konstas got into fights with Indian players throughout the series. He got into a bumping altercation with Virat Kohli during the Boxing Day Test at the storied MCG, which was his first significant incident. While batting at the opposite end, Usman Khawaja was seen attempting to defuse the situation.
Virat Kohli received one demerit point and a fine equal to 20% of his match fee after the incident.
“Tough guys compete in this sport. These things do occur. That’s what many Australian guys have done before,” Gambhir said.
Gambhir said, “I am sure that is why he is playing Test cricket,” in response to a question regarding Konstas’ future. Gambhir said the young opener needed to continue getting better. It’s not always possible to continue smashing from the first ball. Red-ball cricket must be respected. You must draw lessons from your past. The goal of test cricket is to become better every day.
