In order to provide easy transportation options for devotees preparing to attend the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela, which is set to begin on January 13, the Uttar Pradesh government plans to deploy electric buses. Before the Kumbh, around ten to fifteen buses are scheduled to start running in the holy city.
Ahead of the major bathing festival, Mauni Amavasya, on January 29, 30 more buses would be sent from the Lucknow headquarters to Prayagraj.
In order to provide devotees with smooth transportation services and make the trip more pleasant, electric buses will run on a number of routes. These buses will be essential to the transportation system as crores of people are anticipated to attend the Maha Kumbh.
According to a press statement from Uttar Pradesh Transport Corporation’s General Manager (GM) Technical, Ajit Kumar Singh, “10 to 15 electric buses would start operating in Prayagraj prior to the commencement of the Maha Kumbh Mela. Before the Mauni Amavasya celebration, another thirty to forty buses will arrive in Prayagraj.
He said that Switch Mobility is the company providing the buses. With a single charge, each 12-meter-long bus can go over 200 kilometers.
According to Singh, the Prayagraj region is receiving direct delivery of the new electric buses that the Transport Corporation has been assigned. Pre-delivery inspections were formerly carried out in Kanpur, but in light of the Maha Kumbh Mela, they will now be done in the Prayagraj area under the Prayag Depot.
The buses will be deployed in Prayagraj after registration. He went on to say that the Prayagraj regional manager has already decided which routes these buses would go.
A thorough route plan for electric buses that covers both city and interstate lines has been established, according to MK Trivedi, Regional Manager of the Prayagraj district. He said that four spots in Prayagraj—Nehru Park, Bela Kachhar, and Andawa—have been set up with charging stations.
“These buses’ itineraries have been decided upon in consultation with the police and fair administration. Buses will run on six routes on busy days and eleven routes on off-peak days, Trivedi said.
He promised that as soon as the buses arrived, they would start operating.
The Transport Department intends to launch double-decker buses in addition to other electric buses during the second phase. In this phase, a total of 120 electric buses are anticipated, including 100 buses with lengths of 9 and 12 meters and 20 double-decker buses.
Switch Mobility will provide the double-decker buses, while Pinnacle Mobility Pvt. Ltd. will supply the other two varieties. However, running these buses during the Mahakumbh would be difficult.
After twelve years, the Maha Kumbh is being held, and from January 13 to February 26, Prayagraj is anticipated to see a large number of people. The district government has been taking significant measures to protect the devotees from accidents, particularly with regard to crowd control and preventing fire occurrences.
To protect the safety of the devotees, the Maha Kumbh management has chosen to use both people deployment and technical technologies. The government has deployed quick response vehicles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) that can operate on any kind of terrain, firefighting robots, and fire mist motorcycles, according to ADG (Fire Department) Padmaja Chauhan.
On January 14th (Makar Sankranti), January 29th (Mauni Amavasya), and February 3rd (Basant Panchami), the principal bathing ceremonies, called Shahi Snan (royal baths), will be held.
