Walking barefoot has both positive and negative effects on the human body. Ever wondered what happens when you remove the footwear outside the house and walk barefoot at home? Might sound new, but many are now understanding the concept of connecting with nature and trying to walk barefoot once in a while as they find it a relaxing and grounding experience.

Walking barefoot can improve balance, foot strength, and natural gait. Even without socks it can help with the mechanism of the foot. By directly sensing the ground, the feet enhance balance and coordination. Walking barefoot increases intrinsic muscular strength within the feet. It also helps your feet move and flex naturally, which may help correct foot posture and alignment.
Walking barefoot also engages all the muscles in the leg increasing strength and stability. And, this is why doctors even suggest toddlers begin walking barefoot without shoes. The parents are told to have the process of the child walking done naturally so using shoes does not affect the muscles and bones in their feet.

The benefits of walking barefoot also include controlling your foot position and improving the foot mechanics that help the knees, hips, and core. It also gives you relief from improperly fitting shoes that have caused many hammertoes and foot deformities.

Walking barefoot sometimes leads to difficulty as objects like glass, nails, or thorns may hurt the foot. Also, walking in dirty environments can expose your feet to bacteria and fungi causing multiple infections.

Make sure to walk barefoot only on surfaces that are clean, and soft, grass, sand, and carpet. Walking barefoot can be a healthy practice if done mindfully and in the right environment!
