33 years ago Hindi cinema witnessed a stunning love triangle featuring Salman Khan Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt. The film directed by Lawrence DSouza and released on August 31 1991 set a new benchmark at the box office. It even surpassed Subash Ghais highly anticipated film of the year Saudagar.
We are talking about none other the hit romcom of 1991 Saajan starring Salman Khan Sanjay Duttt and Madhuri Dixit in the lead role. The film emerged as the highest-grossing film of the year surpassing Amitabh Bachchans Hum and Dilip Kumars Saudagar at the box office. Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan played parallel leads in the film both vying for Madhuri Dixits love.
However many might not know that Sanjay Dutt wasnt the first choice for the role. Initially the romantic drama was set to feature Salman Khan and Aamir Khan but Aamir known as Mr. Perfectionist couldnt connect with the role of Saagar.
While Rs 35 lakh was spent on the paychecks of Salman Khan Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt the film was made on a budget of Rs 1.58 crore. It opened with a first-day box office collection of Rs 10 lakh but went on to earn Rs 10 crore net in India over its lifetime achieving a staggering profit of 531.91%. This was likely the highest profit made by a Sanjay Dutt film.
Salman Khan was the lowest-paid among the three lead actors earning Rs 11 lakh for the film. While Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit each received Rs 12 lakh. Altogether 22% of the films budget was allocated to the casts salaries.
The song Bahut Pyaar Karte Hai Tumko Sanam became a charbuster and the film turned out to be a musical blockbuster grossing Rs 18 crore worldwide.
