The Brazilian Foreign Ministry congratulated Indonesia for joining BRICS in a statement. According to the report, Indonesia and the other BRICS nations are in favor of reforming the institutions that oversee global governance.

“The Brazilian government applauds Indonesia’s BRICS membership. As Southeast Asia’s most populous country and largest economy, Indonesia supports the reform of global governance institutions and makes a significant contribution to the strengthening of Global South cooperation, both of which are priorities that align with Brazil’s presidency theme: “Enhancing Global South Cooperation for a More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” according to a statement from the Brazilian Foreign Ministry.

Only after the formation of its new administration did Indonesia officially inform the organization of its interest in joining BRICS. According to the statement, the BRICS countries unanimously accepted Indonesia’s participation in 2024 in accordance with the expansion criteria, guiding principles, and processes agreed upon in Johannesburg.

The leaders of China, India, and Russia met in St. Petersburg for the G8 Outreach Summit in 2006, which marked the beginning of BRIC as a formal organization. The alliance was established in 2006 during the inaugural BRIC foreign ministers’ conference, which took place outside the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In 2009, the inaugural BRIC Summit took place in Yekaterinburg, Russia. At the 2010 BRIC Foreign Ministers’ conference in New York, it was decided to turn BRIC into BRICS by adding South Africa.

In 2011, South Africa went to Sanya for the third BRICS summit. With the addition of five additional members in 2024—Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—BRICS continued to grow. In 2024, the 16th BRICS Summit was taking place in Kazan, with Russia serving as its chairman.
