According to media estimates, a strong 7.1-magnitude earthquake that slammed the Nepal-Tibet border area Tuesday morning left at least 95 people dead and 130 wounded.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake struck around 6:35 a.m. (IST) and had an epicenter 10 kilometers below the surface in latitude 28.86°N and longitude 87.51°E. The area was determined to be Xizang (Tibet Autonomous Region), which is close to the border with Nepal.

According to the Xinhua news agency, the majority of the deaths occurred in Xizang, while many injuries and structural damage were also noted.

There have apparently been many home collapses in Tonglai Village, Changsuo Township of Dingri in Xigaze (Shigatse).

Along with triggering fear as people fled their houses, the earthquake also caused vibrations in northern India, hitting regions including Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Delhi-NCR. Thankfully, there have been no reports of fatalities or property damage in India so far.

The initial earthquake was followed by two aftershocks: a 4.7-magnitude tremor with an epicenter at latitude 28.60°N and longitude 87.68°E at a depth of 10 km was recorded at 7:02 a.m. (IST), and another 4.9-magnitude tremor with an epicenter at latitude 28.68°N and longitude 87.54°E at a depth of 30 km was recorded at 7:07 a.m. (IST).

The earthquake was located 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche, close to the Nepal-Tibet border, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Lobuche is located 8.5 km southwest of Everest Base Camp and around 150 km east of Kathmandu, close to the Khumbu Glacier.

Earthquakes are common in Nepal, which is located in an area where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Seismic occurrences of various magnitudes are often the outcome of this tectonic action, which produces the Himalayan area.

The issue is being carefully watched by authorities in Nepal and the impacted areas of India. In a region that has traditionally been susceptible to catastrophic seismic activity, the earthquake has raised fresh worries.
