Tesla CEO Elon Musk has now entered the education sector following his ventures in technology and space. He has opened a new school in Bastrop Texas called the Ad Astra School. The school is Montessori-based where children are encouraged to learn through self-study. Musk aims to change the traditional learning patterns for students. Musk plans to develop it into a university in the future.
Ad Astra focuses on project-based learning with an emphasis on STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics). According to the school’s website it encourages students to solve real-world problems. Musk’s school aims to provide not only academic knowledge but also teach students how to deal with challenges in life.
The school’s curriculum is designed on activity-based learning and it allows students to develop skills accordingly. The school’s concept is similar to Montessori but it did not declare itself as a Montessori institution. The school has multiple features like multi-age classrooms and uninterrupted work periods so they can learn new and innovative things.
At present Ad Astra is a pre-school which offers admission to class 3-9 years students. At least 18 students of class 3-6 years and 30 students of class 6-9 years have been accommodated. The school is charging fees at subsidised rate but in future the tuition cost will align with private schools.
Indian billionaire and Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani also runs the Dhirubhai Ambani International School (DAIS). It seems Musks initiative was inspired by Ambani’s school. The DAIS was established in 2003 and is often referred to as a school for celebrities.
