PTC Web Desk: Amid increasing cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) across India, the Government of Punjab has heightened its vigilance to tackle the potential threat.

Punjab Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh has urged citizens to wear masks while stepping out and assured them that there is no need for panic.

Dr Balbir Singh confirmed that no HMPV cases have been reported in Punjab so far. "The state government is in constant touch with the central authorities and is prepared to address any situation arising from the spread of the virus," he stated.

Addressing the public, the minister advised those with weak immunity and those over 60 years of age to wear masks in crowded places. "This virus is not as severe as Covid-19. It is a mild virus with flu-like symptoms and is not life-threatening," he added.

The Punjab Health Minister assured citizens that Punjab's health department was fully equipped to handle any scenario. "This is not a new or fatal virus. However, people with respiratory issues, such as asthma, should avoid crowded public spaces or wear masks when venturing outside," he said.

Drawing on the state's experiences with Covid-19, the minister said Punjab was better prepared now. "We have alerted doctors and issued advisories across the state. All treatments related to this virus will be provided free of cost," he added.

The Central Government, through ICMR and IDSP, has maintained a robust surveillance system to monitor Influenza-like Illnesses (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illnesses (SARI). According to official data, there has been no unusual rise in ILI or SARI cases nationwide.

As a precaution, the ICMR will increase the number of laboratories capable of testing for HMPV and ensure year-round monitoring of HMPV cases.
