Joanne's journey in the entertainment industry began in the late 90s, with her breakout role as Zoe Tattersall on the iconic British soap .

Her character Zoe first appeared on the show in May 1997. The role of the tearaway pregnant teen was a popular one, with actresses and auditioning for the part before they were cast as the Battersby sisters, Leanne and Toyah.

However, her portrayal of Anna Bates in the internationally acclaimed series Downton Abbey solidified her place in the spotlight.

The role earned her a Golden Globe in 2014 and several Emmy nominations. Joanne’s other notable works include Liar, Angela Black, and films such as In Our Name, for which she won a British Independent Film Award.

Heartbreaking Split

Away from the spotlight, Joanne married IT consultant James Cannon in 2012, and the couple co-founded a production company, Run It.

But despite their shared professional ventures, the actress later revealed in early 2020 that they had quietly separated after nearly eight years of marriage.
