A symbol of superiority in archery for the next generation

For more than ten years, the name Vennam Jyothi Surekha has been synonymous with greatness in Andhra Pradesh archery. This 28-year-old archer, who is from Vijayawada, has won many awards from major international competitions in addition to making her name known in Indian sports history. Surekha is one of the nation’s most accomplished and renowned archers, having won an astounding 61 international medals, including 26 golds, 21 silvers, and 14 bronzes.

Surekha was born in 1996 in the Krishna district’s Challapalli hamlet, and at the age of eleven, she started practicing archery. Despite hailing from a farming background, she quickly rose to prominence in the national and international archery arenas because of her unwavering commitment to sport and her quest for perfection.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Engineering from the esteemed KL University in Guntur, she went on to acquire an MBA while maintaining her success in sports.

There have been many noteworthy turning points in Surekha’s athletic career. She became a worldwide celebrity after being the first compound archer to win three gold medals in a single World Cup.

She also played a key role in the Indian compound women’s team winning the World Archery Championship’s first-ever gold medal. Surekha’s individual accomplishments are as outstanding, including her historic first-ever medal for India in the women’s category at the 2019 World Championship. She is also the first archer to earn eight medals at the Senior World Archery Championship. Her accomplishments go beyond just titles. The world has acknowledged Surekha’s brilliance and constancy. For her outstanding achievements to archery, the Government of India honored her with the coveted Arjuna Award in 2017. At Rashtrapati Bhavan, former President Ram Nath Kovind gave her this accolade, which marked a high point in her already remarkable career. Despite her remarkable accomplishments, Surekha’s modesty is what really makes her stand out.

Even though she is regarded as a role model by many, she maintains her groundedness and credits her success to the support of her family, particularly her father, Vennam Surendra, and the coaching of J. Ra-marao and Jiwanjot Singh Teja. He claims that Surekha consistently breaks her own records and is more of a rival to herself than to others.

Surekha’s impact goes beyond her on-field triumphs. She guides young archers with the same tenacity and enthusiasm that have characterized her career as a senior member of the Indian archery squad. Having won more than 100 national and international medals, she continues to serve as an example to aspiring competitors.
