Maya and Leah Tata daughters of Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata have been inducted into the Board of Trustees of Sir Ratan Tata Industrial Institute (SRTII). SRTII a subset of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust is one of the principal shareholders of Tata Sons the Tata Group’s holding company.  They replaced Arnaz Kotwal and Freddy Talati who resigned from the board. This development marks Noel Tata’s children’s inclusion in all smaller Tata Trusts boards though they are yet to join the key trusts namely Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Allied Trusts and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Allied Trusts. Maya Tata Leah Tata’s Appointment Leah (39) Maya (36) and Neville (32) are Noel Tata’s three children. Noel Tata the stepbrother of Ratan Tata was appointed chairman of Tata Trusts in October 2024. According to an Economic Times report these changes have sparked internal disagreements with outgoing trustee Arnaz Kotwal expressing discontent over the manner of her resignation. Trustee’s Disagreement And Resignation In a letter to fellow trustees Arnaz Kotwal voiced her displeasure at being asked to resign without direct communication from the board. She revealed that Burgess Taraporewala an executive at Tata Trusts and Siddharth Sharma the CEO had facilitated the resignation process through a third party.  She stated Since I am now in Dubai and after considerable thought I have acceded to Burjiss request but was very saddened that none of you reached out to speak with me directly about this matter and I was blindsided by this communication from a virtual stranger under the direction of his CEO Sidharth Sharma both of whom have no nexus to SRTI In a separate email to Taraporewala Kotwal alleged that the resignation request came at Noel Tata’s behest. She added that Mehli Mistry had also reached out regarding her resignation. Tata Trusts didn’t comment but an ET report claimed that with the matter explained that Leah and Maya Tata given their close association with SRTII operations were recently appointed to the Sir Ratan Tata Trust Board of Trustees which nominates three of SRTII’s six board members per its trust deed. Role of SRTII Freddy Talati and Arnaz Kotwal the outgoing trustees have moved on to other roles. Talati is now associated with NCPA while Kotwal works with VFS Global in Dubai. SRTII established in 1928 by Lady Navajbai Tata and the Stree Zarthosti Mandal focuses on providing employment to underprivileged women. The institute offers training in cooking sewing embroidery and Montessori teaching. To support SRTII’s ongoing upgrades the Sir Ratan Tata Trust sought trustees with experience in SRTII operations and regular presence in Mumbai. The decision to appoint Leah and Maya Tata was unanimously approved by the SRTT board including members like Noel Tata Vijay Singh Venu Srinivasan Darius Khambata Jehangir H. Jehangir and Mehli Mistry. Maya and Leah Tata’s Professional Backgrounds Maya and Leah Tata hold managerial roles within the Tata Group. Maya is with Tata Digital while Leah is the Vice President at Indian Hotels. Leah has a master’s degree in marketing from IE Business School. Maya began her career at Tata Capital and is part of the team managing the Tata Neu app. The shift also reflects an ongoing generational transition within the Tata Trusts.
