History of National Youth Day

National Youth Day is celebrated on the occasion of Swami Vivekananda's birth anniversary. The decision to celebrate this day was taken by the Government of India in 1984. The main objective behind choosing to celebrate 12 January as Youth Day was to convey the thoughts and teachings of Swami Vivekananda to the youth. For the first time, National Youth Day was celebrated on 12 January 1985 and after that every year this day is being celebrated by dedicating it to the youth.

Who is Swami Vivekananda?

Swami Vivekananda was born on 12 January 1863 in Kolkata. His real name was Narendranath Dutt. Swami Vivekananda presented a wonderful confluence of spirituality and national service through his life. He gave a historic speech at the World Religion Conference held in Chicago in 1893. He started his speech with "Brothers and Sisters of America". This speech gave India a new identity on the global stage.

Objective of National Youth Day

The main objective of National Youth Day is to convey the thoughts of Swami Vivekananda to the youth and inspire them for positive change in the society. His ideals and thoughts instill confidence, leadership ability, and national pride in the youth.
