St Helens' Morgan Knowles opens up on future plans and explains club feeling 'different'

Morgan Knowles has already spent half his life at - but would love to see out his entire career with them.

The combative loose forward enjoys a testimonial game against Salford later this month as he celebrates a stellar journey so far.

But he’s been with Saints more than the standard ten years: Knowles signed up aged just 14 and turned 28 in November so it’s a case of man and boy.

With more than 200 games in his locker, four Grand Final wins, a World Club Challenge title and Challenge Cup glory, it would be no surprise if he remained a one-club man.

The popular Saints vice-captain, who’s out of contract at the end of this year, admitted: “It would be amazing.

“It doesn’t happen too often nowadays to stay at one club all the way and for that amount of time.

"It shows a lot about the person if they do: they’re obviously good enough and a good person to stay around, especially at a good club like Saints. If that happened, I’d be made up.”

A proud Cumbrian who is renowned as one of Super League’s toughest players, Knowles has proved an example to many of how hard work pays off.

He recalled: “Saints first started watching me back home up in Barrow where there’s no Super League teams there or near.

“I played in a Barrow and District game against St Helens Service Area Under 12s and from that they watched me for a couple of years.

“They offered me a scholarship to come onto the Under 15s programme so I was 14 when I signed, driving up and down the motorway all the time.

“I definitely didn’t think then that I’d still be here now. It was beyond my wildest dreams I’d be here 12 seasons later in the first team.

“It’s a bit crazy to think about. It’s flown by, though. Looking back it doesn’t seem that long ago but it has been a long time.”

After a rare trophyless campaign, however, Knowles is desperate to hit back with Paul Wellens’ side in 2025.

They stumbled in sixth last term, dogged by injuries and out of sorts for much of the year as their four-season reign as champions crashed.

But with new signings like NRL stars Triston Sailor and Kyle Feldt, plus England assistant Lee Briers coming in from Brisbane to aid Wellens, they are primed to respond.

Knowles, who played in both England’s Test wins over Samoa in the autumn, admitted: “There’s definitely a bit of a different feel around the place.

“It’s exciting. Briersy’s looking after the attack. He’s got free reign and will be masterminding all those sorts of things.

“We all want to get back to winning ways.”
