The superstar today was a flop actor in the starting of his career. He has also been a part of many multi-starrer films that didnt work. Earlier the directors and producers used to believe that a multi-starrer film was a guarantee of a hit. In the beginning of this actors career he was appreciated for his work however in the next two years he saw multiple flops and also had decided to leave acting and go back to his hometown. But then came one movie that changed his life.
This movie was a crime drama that was rejected by superstars including Dharmendra Rajesh Khanna Dilip Kumar Raaj Kumar and Dev Anand. The reason for rejecting the film was that the lead actor was asked to portray the role of an angry young man which conflicted with his image as a romantic hero.
The movie released in 1973 was directed by Prakash Mehra and written by Salim-Javed. The actor who signed the film became a star overnight with his angry young man role and today rules Hindi cinema. Made in a budget of Rs 90 lakhs this film collected Rs 17 crores at the box office. Neither was this film a comedy nor a romantic one but this film made headlines overnight.
Zanjeer earned significant revenue not only in India but also in the Soviet Union. A remake of the film starring South superstar Ram Charan and Priyanka Chopra was later made but turned out to be a disaster.
We are talking about Amitabh Bachchans Zanjeer. Before this Big B was leaving the film industry but destiny had its own plans. Javed Akhtar recently revealed that even Amitabh was doubtful before signing the film. Speaking at the recently conducted session at IFP Akhtar recalled I went to his (Amitabhs) place. I told him ‘Let me give you the script (of Zanjeer) and make you meet the producer. You don’t discuss any terms and conditions with him. Just do the film in whatever way possible. He asked for a narration. I gave him a narration. I still remember very clearly that he looked at me in wonder. He said Do you think I can pull off this role? Because till then he was playing only poet and doctor and writer and so on. So he said Can I do this? Then I told him Nobody can do it better than you.
