With a goal of linking state capitals to the national capital Indian Railways launched the Rajdhani Express in 1969. Since then the service has expanded to include over 20 Rajdhani trains operating on various routes. The inaugural Rajdhani Express which ran between New Delhi and Howrah continues to stand as a symbol of premium travel within the Indian Railways network.
The fastest Rajdhani Express in India was introduced in 1972 connecting Mumbai to New Delhi. This train passes through major states like Maharashtra Gujarat and Rajasthan. Renowned for its speed and efficiency it has become a key component of the Indian Railways network.
Other fast trains in India include the Vande Bharat Express which is designed to reach a maximum speed of 180 km/h and the Gatimaan Express capable of hitting speeds up to 160 km/h. The Tejas Express stands out with its design to achieve a top speed of 200 km/h. Another notable fast service is the Sealdah Duronto Express which can reach speeds of 130 km/h. Additionally the Bhopal Shatabdi Express offers a maximum speed of 150 km/h making it one of the quicker options on Indian Railways for travelers seeking speed and efficiency.

As per a Financial Express report the Mumbai-New Delhi Rajdhani Express travels a distance of 1384 km in just 15 hours and 32 minutes making it the quickest train on this route. Following it is the AK Tejas Rajdhani Express (train number 12953) which completes the journey in 16 hours and 33 minutes and the CSMT-Hazrat Nizamuddin Rajdhani Express (train number 22221) which takes 17 hours and 55 minutes.
The Mumbai-New Delhi Rajdhani Express (train number 12951/12952) also referred to as the Mumbai-New Delhi Tejas Rajdhani Express operates at a maximum permissible speed of 140 km/h. This makes it the fastest of all Rajdhani services in India.
The Mumbai-New Delhi Rajdhani Express makes stops at six important stations during its journey: Borivali Surat Vadodara Junction Ratlam Junction Nagda Junction and Kota Junction. It operates daily with train number 12951 departing Mumbai Central at 17:00 hrs and arriving in New Delhi at 08:32 hrs the following day. On the return journey train number 12952 departs New Delhi at 16:55 hrs and reaches Mumbai Central at 08:35 hrs.
