AR Rahman and Saira Banu shocked everyone when in November last year they announced their separation. Months after the split Sonu Nigam who has worked with AR Rahman on timeless classics like Satrangi Re (Dil Se) and Aayo Re Sakhi (Water) opened up about Rahman’s nature and what the music maestro is like as a person. In a recent interview Nigam shared that AR Rahman is a strict professional and someone who doesn’t open up easily. Reflecting on his initial collaboration with Rahman for Daud he also emphasized Rahman’s personality and work ethic. In a chat with O2 India Sonu Nigam said “He doesn’t have relationships. He is not the kind of person who has relationships. He doesn’t open up to anyone. At least I have never seen that.” Nigam further added “Perhaps he opens up in front of his older friends who have known him as Dileep. But I haven’t seen him opening up or having any relationship with anybody. He is not a friendly person. He is just into his work.” Talking about his US tour Nigam revealed that AR Rahman always stayed away from gossip and doesn’t know how to get involved in one. He said “He does his work and his prayer. He doesn’t behave badly with anyone. He will not hurt anybody’s heart. He won’t speak ill about anyone. He is detached from all of this. He must be attached to his family but I haven’t seen him being very friendly with others.” Nigam noted “He doesn’t let anyone come close to him. That’s how it should be.” He even called Rahman a “unique personality.” Meanwhile AR Rahman’s separation from Saira Banu came as a shock to many. The duo were married for 29 years before Saira Banu announced their separation in November 2024.
