, the Australian cricketing great, shared his initial reaction to getting stuck at 9,999 Test runs at the conclusion of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, a five-match Test series which his team won 3-1. The 35-year-old remarked that at the time, he felt a little bit hurt to lose his wicket to Prasidh Krishna in the Australian second innings as they were in pursuit of the 162-run target in the fifth and final Test, which was eventually chased down with six wickets in hand.
On day three of the fifth and final Test of the BGT at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Steve Smith needed five runs to reach the 10,000-run milestone in Test cricket, to become the 15th cricket in format's history to achieve the great feat. But, after scoring four runs in his first eight balls at the SCG, a rising delivery from Prasidh Krishna was too much for Steve Smith to handle, and he only managed to spoon it in the air towards the gully region where Yashasvi Jaiswal took a low diving catch.

One run… it hurt a little bit at the time: Steve Smith reacts after being stranded on 9,999 Test runs
While speaking to The Sydney Herald, Steve Smith admitted that he wasn't happy with finding himself stranded on 9,999 Test runs at his home ground SCG. He was quoted as saying, 'One run.. it hurt a little bit at the time. It would have been nice to have ticked that off in front of all my friends and family here at my home ground, but hopefully, I can knock it off first thing in Galle (Sri Lanka, first Test). I probably let it wander (in my mind) too much throughout the game. It's a cool milestone to tick off.'
The first chance for Steve Smith to reach the 10,000-run milestone in Test cricket will come in the upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka in Galle later this month. In the absence of Pat Cummins due to injury and personal reasons, Steve Smith will captain the Australian cricket team in the first Test at the Galle International Cricket Stadium from January 29 onwards, while the second match of the series will begin at the same venue on February 6.
Moreover, Steve Smith is the fourth batter in Test history to get dismissed in the 9,990s after Brian Lara, Mahela Jayawardene, and Alastair Cook.
