Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) police said Friday that they have increased security after receiving a bomb threat email that threatened to “blow up the campus.” According to Superintendent of Police (City) Mrigank Shekhar Pathak, since yesterday evening, all top university authorities, including the vice-chancellor, have been visiting all vulnerable places on and around campus.

The police are “not taking any chances” with this warning, according to Pathak.

According to the officer, the Maulana Azad library is one of many crowded locations under strict police and university authorities’ surveillance.

According to AMU spokesman Asim Siddiqui, “ransom money” is also referenced in the email exchange, PTI was told.

“The police have been notified of this issue by the university authorities, and they have also activated the Cyber Crime Cell to track down the source of the email address that was used to issue the threat,” he said.

At key points throughout campus, police personnel, including dog teams, have been summoned into action. Circle Officer (Civil Lines) Abhay Pandey said police were trying to ascertain if the threat was a hoax or meant to disrupt the peace in the city.

Earlier Friday, Delhi Police apprehended a Class 12 student for allegedly threatening to blow up schools in the capital.

On Thursday, over a dozen educational institutions received bomb threats, the latest in a series of similar incidents in Delhi. In recent months, other airports and organizations in different districts of Uttar Pradesh received similar bomb threats, which turned out to be false.
