As one of the most prominent figures in international cricket high expectations surrounded him. The series started well for Kohli as he reached a significant milestone becoming the batter with the most Test centuries on Australian soil. He scored his eighth Test century during the Perth Test. However his form dipped as the series progressed and by the end he had accumulated only 190 runs at an average of 23.75 from nine innings. The latter part of the tour was particularly challenging for Kohli as he managed just 85 runs in seven innings during the final four Tests. Off-field incidents also made headlines during this period including a controversial shoulder bump with Australian player Sam Konstas for which Kohli was penalized by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Additionally Kohli sparked tension with the Australian crowd by making a sandpaper gesture adding to the drama surrounding the tour.
