Come April 2025, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is set to start renovation of its Terminal 2 (T2). The project, spearheaded by GMR Airports Limited’s Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), will span approximately six months. It aims to transform the 40-year-old facility into a state-of-the-art terminal.
Terminal 2 was constructed four decades ago by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), and since then, it has served as a key hub for domestic travel. However, with growing passenger numbers and evolving aviation needs, the need for modernization has become imperative. The Terminal was first opened on May 1, 1986, and was used for international flights till July 2010. At present, all international flights operate from Terminal 3.
It is important to have a more efficient and passenger-friendly space, and the renovations will aim to achieve that. This renovation work will be done in order to align with DIAL’s vision of establishing IGIA as a premier hub for domestic and international travel.
If reports are to go by, the upgraded Terminal 2 will feature several advanced amenities designed to improve both functionality and aesthetics. One of the most important feature post renovations will be the installation of India’s first passenger boarding bridges with autonomous docking technology. Travellers can expect more streamlined operations and enhance passenger convenience.

As per the latest reports, Terminal 2 will receive modern ceilings, skylight designs to allow natural light, and upgraded flooring to elevate its visual appeal. Improved road connectivity is also part of the plan.
For all these works, Terminal 2 will be temporarily closed for a period of four to six months starting in April. If reports are to go by, when the terminal will be shut for renovations, flight operations will be shifted to the newly developed Terminal 1, which has been prepared to handle the increased passenger load.

The timing of the project is critical as DIAL forecasts domestic passenger traffic at IGIA to reach maximum capacity by FY 2025-26.
The refurbished Terminal 2 is expected to reopen in the second quarter of FY 2025-26, with its enhancements positioning IGIA as a leader in airport infrastructure. The initiative is part of DIAL’s broader strategy to solidify Delhi Airport ’s status as a leading aviation hub in India and the region.
