Strasbourg: Horror as 'two trams collide' at train station leaving dozens injured

Dozens were left injured after two trams reportedly collided at a major station in Strasbourg, France, on Saturday afternoon.

Chaotic scenes were recorded in a clip circulating on social media platform X, seemingly showing several people on the ground following the incident, while an alarm resonates in the air.

Local media, including , cites an initial assessment claiming that around 30 people remained injured in the collision.

Five of them, the local reports said, are believed to be in a critical condition.

According to the initial findings, one of the trams unexpectedly took a different track, likely due to an error at a track switch.

After diverting, the moving tram collided with a second tram that was stationary on the unintended track.

The Bas-Rhin national police confirmed on X that an accident had occurred and that "tram traffic was interrupted in both directions at Strasbourg station" .

Part of the station is believed to have been cordoned off, with four bus lines blocked from the central station, according to a live travel alert.

Bas-Rhin fire and rescue service said on X: "Tram accident at the Gare Centrale stop at Strasbourg. Numerous resources mobilized. Avoid the areas of Place des Halles, Gare, Boulevard du Président Wilson and facilitate access for emergency services."

City councillor Pierre Jakubowicz said he was thinking of those injurfed in the accident. He added: "Major tram collision at Strasbourg station. Support and recognition for the emergency services mobilized and all my thoughts for the injured."
