Rajesh Khanna often referred to as Bollywoods first superstar ruled the Hindi film industry in the 1970s. Movies with his name attached were guaranteed to make a big splash at the box office. During this period Khanna landed a role in a film that was initially intended for Shashi Kapoor.
Rajesh Khannas acting captivated audiences and to this day people continue to enjoy his films. It was said that any movie featuring his name was destined to be a hit. Throughout his career Khanna delivered numerous blockbuster films. One such film which created a sensation at the box office 55 years ago is a fascinating tale.
In 1970 Rajesh Khanna starred in the film Sachaa Jhutha where he played a double role – both the hero and the villain. His pairing with Mumtaz in the film was a hit and their chemistry on screen was widely appreciated.
Interestingly Shashi Kapoor was initially the first choice for this movie but he declined the offer due to his unwillingness to work with Mumtaz who at that time was starring in several B-grade stunt films. Consequently the film was offered to Rajesh Khanna who went on to make history at the box office with the movie.
Sachaa Jhutha became a massive hit and was the second-highest-grossing film of 1970. The films story was well-loved by audiences and Khanna’s performance won the hearts of many. The film also earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
Between 1969 and 1971 Rajesh Khanna achieved a record by delivering 17 consecutive hit films and Sachaa Jhutha was one of them. The movie was originally titled Dil Sachaa Chehra Jhutha but it was later changed to Sachaa Jhutha.
Directed by Manmohan Desai the films story was penned by his wife Jivanprabha Desai. This collaboration proved to be a significant turning point in Rajesh Khanna’s illustrious career.
