New Delhi: The recent BCCI selection meeting for the upcoming India vs. England five-T20I series starting January 22 saw Mohammed Shamis return as a key highlight. While Jasprit Bumrah who captained India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Tests in Perth and Sydney was rested for the England series further surprises were in store.
Suryakumar Yadav will lead the Men in Blue in the five-match T20I series with spinner Axar Patel as his deputy. Interestingly Hardik Pandya has been excluded from the squad.
Young talents like Abhishek Sharma Tilak Varma Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel have retained their spots in the 20-over team. Harshit Rana who was part of the T20I squad against South Africa but didn’t play has also been added to the 15-man squad for the upcoming series.
Mohammed Shamis return to the Men in Blue after a long hiatus will be a major talking point. The 34-year-old seamer makes his comeback to the national team after being away since 2023. His return follows a stellar domestic cricket season with Bengal where he made a strong recovery from ankle surgery that kept him sidelined for almost a year. Shami’s remarkable resurgence in competitive cricket began when he was named to Bengals Vijay Hazare Trophy squad.
Arshdeep Singh Harshit Rana and Mohammed Shami will lead Indias seam attack while Axar Patel Varun Chakravarthy Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar will handle the spin duties. The five-match T20I series against England will kick off on January 22 in Kolkata. The second and third matches are set for January 25 and 28 in Chennai and Rajkot respectively. The fourth match will be held on January 31 in Pune with the final game scheduled in Mumbai on February 2.
