Have you ever thought about the potential psychological effects of a chilly plunge? After the initial shock, dipping in cold water is showing significant benefits for mental and brain health. Originally used by athletes as a recuperation method, it has since developed into a daring wellness activity for anyone looking to improve their general health.

What does the study say?

A recent study by the University of Central Lancashire suggests that regular cold-water immersion may benefit cognitive performance and sleep quality. Thirteen healthy volunteers around age 21 immersed themselves in 10°C water for 10 minutes, three times a week, for one month. Researchers assessed their cognitive performance, sleep quality, and overall well-being before, during, and after the study.

Participants demonstrated improved processing speed and mental flexibility. Sleep disturbances also decreased, with participants reporting better rest by the third week. Furthermore, worry decreased after the first immersion and this effect continued throughout the study. However, overall happiness and mood remained unchanged.

Researchers believe the cognitive benefits may be linked to the body's physiological response to cold, such as increased blood flow and endorphin release. Cold exposure may also calm the nervous system, promoting relaxation and stress reduction. Lead researcher Robert Allan noted, “Cold-water immersion helps with sleep, particularly during periods of pronounced sleep disturbances.”

While the study did not measure mood elevation, researchers suggest that environmental and social factors associated with open-water swimming may contribute to mood boosts often reported by open-water swimmers.

Researchers caution that cold-water immersion is not suitable for everyone, particularly those with cardiovascular disease or cold hypersensitivity. The study, “Influence of acute and chronic therapeutic cooling on cognitive performance and well-being,” by Joseph Knill-Jones et al., was published in Physiology & Behavior.

Improve focus and productivity

An ice-cold dip can assist if you have trouble focusing or are feeling unproductive. Your mental clarity, attention, and alertness are all enhanced by the cool temperature. You might feel more driven to stay on task and finish it effectively if you use cold water therapy before beginning a task.

Minimize signs of stress and anxiety

Two of the most prevalent mental health issues that people nowadays deal with are stress and anxiety. By lowering inflammation and assisting in hormone regulation, cold water therapy has been demonstrated to lessen the symptoms of both conditions. You may help your body and mind de-stress and relax by using cold water therapy. You'll feel better the healthier your body is; therefore, it's crucial for mental health.
