SAS Rogue Heroes has returned to BBC One, with the latest episode focusing on Reg Seekings (portrayed by Theo Barklem-Biggs) as he grapples with the traumatic events he's witnessed. He forms a bond with an Italian family and confides in the young son about the death that has been a constant presence in his life.
Later in the episode, he and his unit are caught off guard by German fire, leading to further devastating losses for Reg. The real-life Reg Seekings started his military career as a private in the Cambridgeshire Regiment before volunteering with the Commandos in 1940.
He joined the SAS the next summer and played a significant role in their first successful operation in Libya. Not only was he physically strong, but he also possessed a sharp intellect and his insights were often sought after.
He faced numerous challenges and narrowly escaped death several times. In 1943, in a side street in the Italian town of Termoli, he was in the back of a truck that was hit by a shell strike.
While most of the people inside were either killed or severely injured, Seekings miraculously escaped virtually unharmed. He then gathered all the dismembered limbs of those who had died, ensuring they were correctly identified before being laid to rest.
His luck held in 1944 when he survived a gunshot wound to the back of his head, which only temporarily incapacitated him.
Just weeks later, he was back in action, disrupting German communication lines, all while living with a bullet lodged at the base of his skull.
Actor Theo, who portrays the spirited warrior Reg in the series, expressed his elation at reprising the role for the show's second instalment. Diving into the Sicilian chapter of Reg's life, Theo shared: "I knew where we would be and I knew the impact that Reg Seekings had on Sicily and the impact it had on him."
He conveyed his anticipation for writer Steven Knight to delve into this part of the narrative, saying: "I was certainly excited and hoped that Steven Knight would tuck into that part of the story, so I'm very grateful that he has."
Theo hinted at the inner conflict faced by his character, noting: "Certainly for Seekings there's more struggle with the 'inner witness'."
Highlighting the psychological battles within, he added: "There's more inner turmoil and Seekings coming to terms with what he's maybe becoming."
SAS Rogue Heroes airs on BBC One on Sundays and is available on BBC iPlayer
