New Delhi: Shaheen Shah Afridi, the fast bowler and son-in-law of former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi, has surprisingly been left out of the squad for the upcoming two-Test series against West Indies in Pakistan. This unexpected move raises serious questions about his future in Test cricket, especially since he has missed eight of the last twelve Test matches played by Pakistan since early 2024.
A source close to the selectors revealed that both Shaheen and fellow fast bowler Naseem Shah are being groomed for the Champions Trophy. The selectors are eager for them to shine in this prestigious 50-over tournament, particularly since Pakistan is the reigning champion. This focus on the Champions Trophy has prompted notable changes in Test team selections.
Interestingly, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) allowing Shaheen to play in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League. This decision was made during Pakistan’s Test series against South Africa, which raises concerns about the board’s priorities during crucial Test matches.
Alongside Shaheen, several other players have also been left out of the squad against West Indies, including Naseem Shah, Mir Hamza, Muhammad Abbas, and Aamer Jamal. Despite their participation in the recent South Africa series, which Pakistan lost, this roster change suggests a strategic shift as the team gears up for upcoming tournaments.
Despite these challenges, Shaheen has an impressive record to his name, boasting 116 wickets in 32 Test matches. His earlier absence from the squad for the South Africa series was explained by selectors as a strategy to keep him fit for the ICC Champions Trophy, set to commence on February 19.
