According to McSweeney, playing spin in Australia is very different from playing spin in Sri Lanka

January 13, New Delhi During the two-match Test series in Galle, Australia’s Nathan McSweeney has said that he would introduce a new spin bowling strategy in Sri Lanka. He also noted that playing against spinners on the island country is significantly different from facing them at home.

McSweeney, who averaged only 14.4 in three games against India’s fast-bowling star Jasprit Bumrah in the previous Border-Gavaskar Trophy, lost his spot to youthful opener Sam Konstas.

However, McSweeney was given another opportunity in Test cricket when he was selected for the Test tour to Sri Lanka. There, the hosts’ spinners, captained by Prabath Jayasuriya, who claimed 12 wickets in a 2022 victory over Australia, would test his abilities against spinners.

“In Australia, I’ve developed a strategy (batting to spin) that has so far been effective for me in my Shield career, but I’ll undoubtedly need to come up with a new one. Playing spin there is not at all like playing spin in Australia.

“I’m fortunate to have experienced a lot of spin—and good spin—growing up in Queensland with Mitch Swepson and Matt Kuhnemann. I’m hoping to be able to carry out the task in Sri Lanka. I’m optimistic since I didn’t really seize my chance when I received my first three Tests, but you never know,” McSweeney told The Age on Monday.

He also said he was certain that his off-spin bowling, which he does seldom, will be useful in Sri Lanka. “I think my condition hasn’t been good enough to bowl many overs in shield cricket over the last several years, but I’m still putting in a lot of effort. Without a doubt, I would adore having a bowl under circumstances that are conducive to off-spin bowling if I had the chance.
