We all know that keeping our makeup brushes squeaky clean is a must to avoid smearing and dirt across our faces.

But, it turns out your hairbrush needs some TLC too! Nicole Jaques, known on as , has let her followers in on a little secret: hairbrushes should be deep-cleaned every fortnight to prevent the build-up of that grim grey lint.

She revealed what this lint actually consists of, leaving her followers utterly gobsmacked. In her post and video, she detailed: "The residue that you see in your hairbrush that sometimes resembles grey lint is dead skin cells and sebum, along with old, matted hair and hair product residue.

"This creates bacteria and your hairbrush slowly becomes more and more contaminated." To tackle this, Nicole suggests giving your brush a good soak in warm water with "shampoo or baking soda" for about 20 minutes.

After doing so herself, she described the leftover water as "so gross." She also shared a handy tip for round brushes, advising: "If you have a round brush, use scissors to snip the clumps of hair on both sides, for easier removal. Once all hair is out of your brushes then, fill a large bowl (or your sink) with warm water and mild shampoo or baking soda (for deodoriser) and swish the brush around in the water for a deep clean.

"Allow it to soak for up to 20 minutes. Use a clean toothbrush to scrub between the bristle rows and around the handle if desired. The baking soda will act as a gentle abrasive to remove the build-up, and shampoo will help clean the brush.

"Rinse with warm water and let air dry. It's recommended to do this at least every two weeks." Nicole also suggested using 70 per cent concentration rubbing alcohol to disinfect and "ensure they are thoroughly sterilised."
