New Delhi: Dear cricket give me one more chance – this heartfelt message was shared by star batter Karun Nair in an emotional tweet on December 10 2022 after being left out of Karnataka’s playing XI during the 2022-23 domestic season. In a revealing interview with Zee News Digital Nair spoke candidly about the emotional turmoil he experienced during those difficult moments. “It was a very emotional moment for me. I felt like I was lost and didn’t know where I stood. It took me a while to get over it and rebuild from scratch. I reminded myself that I needed to start from the very beginning and take it step by step. My only goal was to perform well for my team” Karun shared. Over the years Karun Nair has shown two distinct sides to his cricketing journey. First when he achieved the remarkable feat of scoring a triple century against England in 2016 becoming only the second batter after Virender Sehwag to do so. Despite this extraordinary achievement Nair found himself dropped from the Indian team. Fast forward to today after seven years the 33-year-old has been in sublime form accumulating 664 runs in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. Playing for Vidarbha he has scored five centuries in six innings. However this success wasn’t handed to him easily. Nair not only altered his playing style but also significantly matured in his understanding of the game. “I think the only difference is age. Over time I’ve gained a better understanding of my game. I’m more aware of the situations and know what to do or what not to do at crucial moments. These are the main differences to be honest” Karun Nair shared. During the 2023-24 Ranji season Karun Nair impressed with a remarkable 690 runs following a stellar debut for Northamptonshire in the County Championship. In his three matches he scored 78 150 and 21. As Team India endured a disappointing defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with their batters falling short fans are now calling for a change in the batting lineup. Nairs recent form makes him a strong contender for a spot in Indias Test playing XI. “I did not make any changes in my batting. It was the first time I went to play county cricket. I was watching a lot of videos of certain bowlers to get an idea of the conditions. All I was telling myself was it does not matter how many runs I score I just wanted a stage to learn how to play in these conditions. It gave me a lot of confidence as I was able to stay there for a long period of time. I realized that I am good enough to play in these conditions” said Karun Nair reflecting on his experience in County cricket. After years of playing for Karnataka Karun Nair found himself dropped from the squad which led him to make the bold decision of shifting his base to Vidarbha in Maharashtra. I was warming my sofas at home. My only option came when I wanted to play in the DY Patil tournament in Mumbai. Things went well and I took part as a guest player. Then I got to meet Abey Kuruvilla who had known me since my U19 days. I told him I needed a team to play domestic cricket and that’s how Vidarbha came in Karun explained in his conversation with Zee News. In the 2024 IPL auction Karun Nair went unsold despite his impressive performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali and Maharaja Trophy. I was a bit shocked when I did not get picked in IPL 2024. I realized that I had to live with it and needed to do something different. I just decided to go to play county cricket he shared acknowledging the disappointment but focusing on moving forward. However there was a silver lining for the veteran batter when he was roped in by the Delhi Capitals for IPL 2025 for a sum of Rs 50 Lakhs. Speaking about his preparations Karun said “I think there is so much more cricket I will be playing before the IPL 2025. I want to take one step at a time. I will start focusing on it once I am done with the domestic matches.”
