Bhanupriya was born on 15 January 1967 in a Telugu family in Rangampeta, Rajahmundry district of Andhra Pradesh. Initially her name was Manganabhanu, but on paper her name was Bhanupriya. Bhanupriya's family shifted to Chennai and her inclination towards South film industry increased. Bhanupriya's younger sister Shantipriya is also a South actress. From 1983 to 1995, Bhanupriya was included in the list of top actresses of South Indian cinema. In 1998, she married businessman Adarsh Kaushal who lived in America. They had a daughter in 2003, but both got divorced in 2005.
