Pep Guardiola's illustrious tenure at has taken a dramatic downturn this season. Despite leading his team to six Premier League titles - four of them in consecutive seasons - the 53-year-old's 2024/25 campaign has been nothing short of disastrous.
His squad currently languishes in sixth place, miles behind rivals Liverpool and Arsenal. They've also shown an uncharacteristic inconsistency across all competitions, even enduring a seven-game winless streak towards the end of 2024. This trend continued as they squandered a two-goal lead at Brentford on Tuesday.
Such on-field chaos has also spilt over off the pitch, with reports that the manager has separated from his wife, Cristina Serra. Previous concerns about Guardiola's well-being have also surfaced - fans have been confronted, and players have been subjected to unusual tirades as Express Sport dives into the head coach's tumultuous term so far.
Ortega confusionIn the most recent of these worrying incidents, Guardiola was seen quite erratically grabbing and shouting at goalkeeper Stefan Ortega after Tuesday's draw against Brentford.
Two goals from Phil Foden seemed to have secured all three points for the visitors, restoring some semblance of order to their chaotic campaign. However, Yoane Wissa reduced the deficit with eight minutes remaining before Christian Norgaard's 92nd-minute header was flapped at by Ortega, drawing the match, reports .
In a stark display of passion, Pep Guardiola was seen fiercely shouting and yet embracing his goalkeeper after the final whistle, displaying mixed emotions. The City boss later clarified his actions post-match, insisting he was simply praising Ortega for his performance.
"[Josko Gvardiol] played incredible! I was satisfied! The same with [Ortega]," Guardiola explained. "I said how good he played, the actions with the ball, the pass to Erling [Haaland], how happy and satisfied I am, especially with these two players and what they have done."
Head scratchesBefore this incident, Guardiola caught attention last year with apparent self-inflicted scratches on his nose and head following a tense Champions League stalemate with Feyenoord.
The injuries, which were notable before a press conference in December 2024, were pointed out by journalists, to which Guardiola gave a concerning response: "I cut it with my finger, my nail," he admitted with a chuckle before making an unsettling comment: "I want to harm myself."
Realising the gravity of his words, Guardiola's team later took to social media to express regret over his attempt at humour regarding the issue.
"I was caught off guard with a question at the end of a press conference last night about a scratch which had appeared on my face and explained that a sharp fingernail had accidentally caused this," read a statement posted on behalf of Guardiola on his official X and Instagram accounts. "My answer was in no way intended to make light of the very serious issue of self-harm."
Liverpool fan altercationThings then took yet another turn for the worse for Guardiola when, a week later, he found himself in another altercation, this time with an assumed Liverpool fan.
After City's 2-0 defeat at Anfield in December, a visibly disappointed Guardiola ignored a person filming him, walking straight past and eliciting a reaction. "F***ing hell, mate, just cause you lost," said the one holding the camera - a comment that clearly irked the 53-year-old.
Guardiola spun around, seemingly ready to confront the supporter, but was restrained by his companions. While it's unclear what he said in response, he looked frustrated and angry as he turned to face the supporter, adding to the criticism he'd been receiving throughout the season.
Autograph hunter tiradeBefore the Brentford stalemate and his scolding of Ortega, Pep Guardiola had a run-in with autograph hunters reportedly loitering near his residence, hoping for signatures.
In a video shared online, Guardiola can be heard warning them: "Don't come again, I won't tell you again. I know your faces. Go to school to prepare yourselves, guys. You are kids. You are young... (points to a man) Well, you are not young! You are young, guys, so don't be here wasting your time.
"Do you want to live a life like this? Or [live], honestly?" When one individual mentioned his past as a chef, Guardiola retorted sharply: "So let's continue to do this, eh? Well then, prepare better, prepare better! F***ing hell, man! This is for all the people. What are your dreams? Tell me what it is, what do you dream, my friend? Go practice out there!"
Although less severe than some of Guardiola's previous incidents, this episode is another indication that the stress of City's concerning season may be taking its toll.
