Following an early goal by Son Heung-min that put the visitors ahead, Arsenal scored two fast goals in the first half to enable them mount an astonishing comeback victory against Tottenham Hotspurs at the Emirates Stadium early Thursday morning.
Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest made it crucial for the Gunners to win in order to improve their chances of winning the championship.
Dejan Kulusevski cautioned Gunners after forcing David Raya to make a great save from a corner, but Son’s effort from the outside of the box deflected off Thomas Partey and got past the Gunners goalkeeper in the 25th minute, shocking the home crowd.
Arsenal’s offensive woes persisted until the 40th minute, and they did make the most of their chance when it did present themselves. Declan Rice’s excellent corner kick was met by Gabriel Magalhaes, whose header deflected off Dominic Solanke’s chest and inside the netting to tie the score.
Leandro Trossard collected a great assist from Martin Odegaard four minutes later, just one minute before halftime, and his drive sailed between Antonin Kinsky’s hands and into the far corner of the goal, giving Arsenal their first lead.
In the second half, Arsenal could unwind more, but Kai Havertz kept up his bad play. He missed two more opportunities to score inside the box after missing ones against Manchester United and Newcastle. But Arsenal managed to hold into the lead until the very end, earning themselves three whole points.
Arsenal is four points behind Liverpool (47), in second position with 43 points from 12 victories, 7 draws, and 2 defeats. Spurs have 24 points from seven victories, three draws, and eleven defeats, placing them in 13th place.
Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, was cited by Sky Sports as saying after the game, “The boys were outstanding.” Despite playing 120 minutes less than we did 72 hours before, our performance was outstanding. Although we made things difficult for ourselves, the attitude was excellent. The energy and goal were excellent.
“It’s just a foundation since we play every three days; now it’s about the following day. It’s about Aston Villa now, even if we won today, which is fantastic. My daily observations, not simply the outcomes, are what give me confidence. You don’t always receive what you deserve in football. We are incapable of pitying ourselves. Performance is something we can manage, and they did it again today,” he said.
Additionally, according to Sky Sports, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said, “Not good enough, especially the first half which was way too passive.” We gave Arsenal the upper hand. With and without the ball, we let them set the pace, which frustrated me. Not quite good enough.
“We’re not like that. I didn’t build up the squad to play that way. It just wasn’t good enough to see Arsenal play while sitting in.”
“A miracle remedy does not exist. To change our fortunes and our season, we must put in a lot of effort and fight hard on Sunday. Although there are always explanations for why things occur, the truth is that our league performance and results have fallen well short of expectations. That must be altered.
“We just didn’t play close to the persona I had in mind for us. We proved against Liverpool that we are an aggressive team both with and without the ball, but today we were much too quiet. That is unacceptable. Although it was somewhat better, the second half was insufficient.
“No one at the club can tolerate this; it is wrong that we are losing so many games in a league season. He said, “Yes, we are asking for big jobs, but I hope that the 18-year-olds [Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall] are suffering just as much as anyone else because they can’t deliver on a big day.”
