is weighing up his options after his stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars came to an end, leaving him without a team for the time being.

The ex-Wales rugby star had inked a deal with the Jaguars last August, joining their practice squad as a running back following his release from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Initially, Rees-Zammit secured a three-year contract with the Chiefs after turning heads in the NFL's International Player Pathway programme following his surprising departure from rugby. However, he was let go after failing to make the 53-man roster.

After clocking in three pre-season games for the Chiefs, the 23-year-old was eager to vie for an NFL spot with the Jaguars, buoyed by coach Doug Pedersen's assurance that his "opportunity will come" after being wowed by his athletic prowess.

Yet, the season didn't unfold as hoped, with Rees-Zammit not getting any game time with the team. To add to the disappointment, the Jaguars missed out on the play-offs, ending second to last in AFC South, and Pedersen, who had offered the Welshman a fresh NFL opportunity, was dismissed after a lacklustre season.

Now, with his contract with the Jaguars expired, Rees-Zammit finds himself a free agent. Despite the Jaguars securing seven players on what are known as reserve/futures contracts, Rees-Zammit currently isn't among them.

Futures contracts are a critical step for practice squad players or free agents as the regular season wraps up, allowing them to attach themselves exclusively to an NFL franchise before next season. There is no cap on the number signed, provided a team stays within the 90-man roster limit.

Hopeful star Louis Rees-Zammit has yet to secure one of these coveted contracts with any team, though WalesOnline reports that the Jaguars were impressed by him and may attempt to secure his services for their training camp ahead of next season.

Rees-Zammit and his team are meticulously 'figuring out' his next steps as details about his NFL pursuits grow hazy.

Ultimately, the former Gloucester Rugby star eyes a training contract to vie for a coveted spot on either the main team or the practice team, undeterred in his American football ambitions.

In a message last month, Rees-Zammit rallied his supporters on social media with the mantra "trust the process", urging patience amidst a deceleration in momentum after an exhilarating 2024, emphasizing to fans and sceptics alike that "great things take time".

Kicking off the year on an upbeat note, he reflected on the rollercoaster of the previous year and his anticipation for what's to come. "What a crazy year it's been," he penned. "Can't thank everyone enough for the support I've had over the last 12 months. Can't wait to see what the future holds in 2025."
